What is an Apostille and why might I need my company’s corporate documents apostilled??

An Apostille is an Internationally recognized (via The Hague Convention) method of certifying copied documents. How it works is:

 

  • First a Notary in the country of incorporation certifies that (copied) docs presented to him or her are true copies of the originals as sighted by him/her.
  • The local Supreme Court then applies a stamp (The “Apostille”) which in effect confirms the Notary’s signature and/or certification.

 

Most banks and many brokers (eg Forex Brokers) will require a Notarised and Apostilled set of corporate documents before opening an account for a company.
